SMEs Eye on New Media Marketing for Mainland Domestic Sales

To help Hong Kong SMEs apply new media technologies for marketing and Mainland domestic sales, the Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Association (HKSME Association), Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association have jointly compiled a guidebook to provide businesses with a useful technical tool.

The guidebook is a highlight of the “New Media Marketing for PRC Domestic Sales” programme. Funded by the SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department of the HKSAR Government, the programme also includes an outstanding new media marketing ambassadors contest, a website, seminars and workshops.

The guidebook was launched today (19 July 2012) by the Hon. Jeffrey Lam and Dr Hon. Samson Tam, Members of the Legislative Council of the HKSAR; Dr John Chan, Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Mr Nicholas Yang, Executive Vice President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Dr Stephen Kwok, President of HKSME Association; and Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC.

Dr Kwok said, “The Mainland is huge both in terms of its mere size as well as its market potential. Hong Kong SMEs are interested in using new media such as weibo, e-commerce websites and search engines as marketing tools and for brand promotion in developing domestic sales. This project aims to provide SMEs with useful information on new media marketing techniques and strategies.”

Mrs Mak said, “According to the Ministry of Commerce, by the end of 2011 there were 194 million online shoppers in the Mainland, with online retail sales totaling RMB 782.6 billion, up more than 50 per cent from 2010. With new media offering a low-cost and effective channel for domestic sales, Hong Kong SMEs should leverage on these technologies to tap the Mainland market. From start-up to operation, this guidebook can help SMEs formulate cost-effective online domestic sales plans.”

The guidebook features a study of new media and their applications on the Mainland, online shopping habits of Internet users in the Pearl River Delta, as well as case studies in jewellery, watch and clock; domestic appliances; and garment, textile and clothing accessories sectors. Apart from a printed version, the electronic copy will be available on the website: Chinadomesticsales.net thereafter.
