HKPC Urges for Joint Efforts to Improve Security on Cloud and Mobile Technologies

More concerted efforts are needed to help businesses and the public address potential information security risks accompanying the growing use of cloud services and mobile devices, urged Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), at the opening of “Information Security Showcase 2012” today (25 July 2012).

Mrs Mak said, “The successful merger of cloud computing and mobile technologies has allowed their users to store data in the clouds and access them anywhere with their mobile devices. However, the development has also created new security threats that require the collaborative efforts of the Government, mobile device manufacturers, system and application developers, mobile network operators, cloud services providers, and information security professionals to come up with security strategy, products and services to address them.”

Organized by HKPC under the theme of “Security in Cloud and Mobile Devices” this year, the Showcase aims to provide an information and networking platform for the industry on the latest information security products and services. Today’s ceremony was officiated by Mr Daniel Lai, Government Chief Information Officer of the HKSAR.

Mrs Mak said, “In addition to this Showcase, HKPC’s Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) has kicked off a new three-year strategic plan (2012-2015) which puts high priority on security for cloud and mobile technologies.”

In April, HKCERT launched new incident response services for smartphone and mobile device users, and will collaborate with mobile service providers to enhance services and public awareness. For local SMEs, HKPC has also organized a programme to promote their awareness in smartphone information security.

To promote a wider and secure use of cloud computing, HKPC also showcases the latest cloud applications at its recently established one-stop support centre, SME One. It also participates in the Government’s working groups, and partners with trade organizations on initiatives for SMEs to use cloud. HKCERT will also liaise with cloud services providers on incident handling issues.
