13 Local Digital Creative Works Commended at DigiCon6 Awards Ceremony in HK

The outstanding efforts of Hong Kong digital creative talent at the “13th DigiCon6 Awards”, organized by Japanese broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) Television, were commended at a certificate presentation ceremony today (10 February 2012), jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association (HKDEA).

Announced in Japan in last November, “Meeting of the Half Moons”, a short film produced by Mr Ng Ho-Yin of the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, won the first prize of the Hong Kong region in the competition. “Happy Old Man” and “My Poor Neighborhood”, produced by Radio Television Hong Kong with Red Production Limited and Simage Animation & Media Limited respectively, came second and third. At the ceremony today, they were joined by the creators of 10 other excellent local entries (Annex for full list).

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Jerry Liu, Head of Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) of the HKSAR Government, noted, “Animation is one of the fastest growing creative sectors in Hong Kong. We have huge potential in this area, given our abundant supply of talents. CreateHK is committed to nurturing more talents who will form the backbone of our creative economy. In addition to organizing competitions to explore new blood, we have also sponsored a three-year support scheme for animation and other digital entertainment sectors to recruit and provide on-the-job training for new graduates. We look forward to seeing the training results of some of these new graduates, maybe in the next DigiCon6 Awards.”

Apart from organizing Hong Kong’s participation in the DigiCon6 Awards, HKPC and HKDEA also led a delegation comprising Hong Kong finalists to Japan to attend the DigiCon6 Awards Presentation Ceremony and the Asia Content Forum, and visit renowned companies. Top Japanese animators were also invited to Hong Kong to share their experience with local practitioners. These activities are funded by CreateHK’s CreateSmart Initiative.

Other guests at the ceremony today included Mr Tony Lam, Director (Corporate Services) of HKPC; Mr Gabriel Pang, Chairman of HKDEA; Mr Izumi Ikawa, Executive Secretary General, and Mr Masahiko Kawanabe, Producer, TBS DigiCon6 Headquarters, TBS Television, Inc.; Mr Inoue Koichi, General Manager of Cultural Affairs, Sunrise Inc.; and veteran Japanese animation director Mr Junichi Sato.
