HKPC Urges for Enhanced Security on Mobile and Cloud Technologies

With the growing use of cloud services on mobile devices, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) urges Internet users, information security professionals and policy makers to step up efforts to tackle accompanying cyber threats.

Addressing the “Information Security Summit 2013” today (23 October 2013), Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “The wider use of mobile technology will potentially expose our data in a relatively open and uncontrolled environment in favour of hackers. Also, given the borderless nature of the cyber world, the traditional concept of intelligence, technologies, laws and regulations, and jurisdiction may not exactly be compatible with this new era. Data protection has become an enormous challenge for both policy makers and the industry.”

Jointly hosted by HKPC and seven information security bodies, this year’s Summit addresses the theme of “Trust and Privacy in the Cyber Era 2.0 – Securing and Protecting Borderless Data”.

The event is one of HKPC’s ongoing initiatives to assist the community to enhance information security. To support the community to keep up the vigilance against cyber threats, HKPC will continue to strengthen the services of its Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) and the readiness of local Internet stakeholders through hosting the annual territory-wide incident response drill in November. HKCERT will also launch a quarterly report in 2014 with statistics of hacked computers in Hong Kong.

Other officiating guests at the opening of the Summit included Mr Victor Lam, Deputy Government Chief Information Officer (Consulting and Operations) of the HKSAR, and Mr Dale Johnstone, Chairman of the Summit’s organizing committee.
