HK-INC Explores Relocation & Green Opportunities for Critical Components Industry

The ‘Hong Kong Industry Network Clusters’ (HK-INC) of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) convened today (10 May 2013) to explore the technology support for Hong Kong’s critical components industry in relocation, and opportunities in sustainable high-end product designs and domestic sales.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Joseph Poon, Director (Technology Development) of HKPC, said, “During the 12th Five-year Plan period, in addition to promoting domestic consumption, the development of high technology industry and high-end facilities is another focus. Apart from engaging in domestic sales on the Mainland, enterprises are advised to expand into the critical components market as a viable strategy for business transformation and industrial upgrading.”

Critical components industry covers a wide range of sectors, from optics, precision machining, electronics, to magnetic and physical chemistry; which is closely related to the development of high value-adding industries including aerospace, automotive, information technology, precision machining and electronics.

On the issue of manufacturing relocation to Hong Kong, the critical components industry is a suitable candidate with its highly-automated and high precision operation. At the meeting, there was thorough exchange on the technology support necessary for the relocation; as well as new business opportunities in Mainland domestic sales and sustainable product designs.

This is the second HK-INC organized for the critical components industry. At the last meeting which was held in June 2011, participants discussed ways to address the supply chain disruption after the Japan 3.11 earthquake. Held regularly, HK-INC aims to gauge the views of industry on issues of relevance to their development. Participants include Government officials, trade and industry organizations, business and SME associations.

HKPC has been working closely with the Hong Kong Critical Components Manufacturers Association, supporting the industry in research and development, production and management enhancement. HKPC has also developed various critical components and core technologies for automotive, medical device and other emerging industries.
