HKPC’s Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Demonstration Centre Promotes Cost-Effective Production Automation

To promote flexible and cost-effective production management, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has set up the first Intelligent Manufacturing (i-mfg) Technology Demonstration Centre in Hong Kong to assist the industry to adopt Flexible Manufacturing Technology (FMT) and process automation.

Funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, the Centre was opened today (8 July 2013) by the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong; HKPC Chairman, Mr Clement Chen, and Executive Director, Mrs Agnes Mak.

Mr Chen said, “Facing stiff competition, Hong Kong manufacturers should use FMT to integrate functions such as engineering design, production and business management into a highly-automated system. This enables enterprises to respond swiftly to market changes by producing new items with different specifications and quantities more efficiently and economically.”

He continued, “Through this Centre, we aim to raise the level of automation and productivity of the local mould and die and other industries. Apart from demonstrating the application of advanced technologies in mould automation production, the Centre also supports SMEs to use their existing equipment to set up a cost-effective automated production line with minimal investment. This system can reduce the idle time of facilities and more than double their usage.”

With the mould and die industry as pilot, the Centre uses an advanced mould automation software and management system to connect the related facilities in a flexible production layout to systematically enhance the workflow. This can significantly improve efficiency.
