HKPC Launches HSBC-Funded Programme to Improve Industrial Water Management

To address concerns over water shortage and pollution in southern China, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today (19 March 2014) launched the “HSBC Water Programme for Industrial Water Management” to support major water-consuming industries to implement good practices on water management.

Leveraging technical support from HKPC and funding from the global HSBC Water Programme (2012-2016), the new initiative will offer free water management assessment and consultancy to 36 electronics, metal finishing, and textile and leather factories in Guangdong and Hong Kong. Six of them will receive further technical support on the preliminary designs for process improvement and implementation of improvement measures.

Mr Lin Weichao, Vice Director of the Economic and Information Commission of Guangdong Province, and Ms Christine Loh, Under Secretary for the Environment of HKSAR Government, officiated the launch. Other officiating guests included Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, and Ms Malini Thadani, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Asia Pacific, HSBC.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Mak said, “Facing environmental challenges in China and globally, manufacturers need to go beyond compliance. They must eye on sustainability and focus on the impacts to the whole community. By leveraging HKPC’s expertise and experience in environmental management, and our strong industry networks, the Programme aims to support the industry to improve water management, while fostering a sustainable business environment together with the Governments and business sectors in Hong Kong and the Mainland.”

Ms Thadani said, “Water is a fundamental driver of all socio-economic growth. Under the strain of population growth and climate change, booming industries in Guangdong must step up and manage freshwater resources efficiently to support livelihoods in the region. By partnering with HKPC, the HSBC Water Programme, our five-year global commitment to address freshwater issues, hopes to echo mainland policies and catalyse technical capacity building among water intensive sectors in Guangdong.”

Apart from on-site technical support, the 18-month “HSBC Water Programme for Industrial Water Management” also includes knowledge sharing of best practices in water management and practical improvement solutions for major water-consuming industries through seminars, plant visits, water management manuals and website. It will also set up a technical support helpdesk, and organize training for HSBC volunteers to raise public awareness on water conservation.
