HKPC Urges for Management Policy for Mobile and Cloud Adoption

Mobile device users and businesses must update their information security management practices and policies to address new threats in mobile and cloud security, urged Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), at the “Information Security Showcase 2014” today (9 July 2014).

Mrs Mak said, “The growth in awareness and popularity of the ‘Internet of Things’ and the trend of Bring-Your-Own-Device at work have made the threat landscape a moving target. The innovative use of GPS service and new vulnerabilities will open up fresh opportunities for cybercriminals to compromise our security and privacy. Emerging mobile threats, such as banking Trojans that steal mobile transaction authentication codes; and the continuous integration of evolving technologies onto mobile platforms, for example, Near Field Communication, will also complicate the picture further.”

In the case of cloud computing, which offers benefits ranging from a shorter time-to-market, advancing innovation, streamlined operations, to lower capital expenditure, concerns about its security and safe application need to be addressed as well.

Mrs Mak explained, “As cloud technologies continue to mature rapidly, many security loopholes will be closed. However, it is equally important for businesses to keep their administrative controls and management processes updated to cater for new development methodologies, platforms, and emerging technologies in cloud computing.”

Hosted by HKPC, the Showcase this year addresses the theme of “Mobile and Cloud Security in Today’s Threat Landscape”. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, it includes a conference featuring local and international experts, an exhibition on latest products and services, and technical workshops. Today’s ceremony was officiated by Mr Daniel Lai, Government Chief Information Officer of the HKSAR.

On top of organizing the Showcase to raise public awareness on mobile and cloud security, HKPC, through its Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre, has launched the Hong Kong Google Play Store's Apps Security Risk Report and the Hong Kong Security Watch Report to alert the public and businesses of the latest cyber threats. Moreover, HKPC has assisted in the compilation of cloud security and privacy guidelines for SMEs and individuals by the HKSAR Government.
