HKPC Calls for Vigilance in Era of Internet of Everything

With more smart devices becoming inter-connected to offer extended applications in the emerging “Internet of Everything” (IoE) era, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) urges businesses and organizations to strengthen their readiness against potential cyber threats.

Addressing the “Information Security Summit 2014” today (15 October 2014), Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “The growing dependence on Internet applications has also increased the risks of information security attacks. Indeed, the number of incidents handled by HKPC’s Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) in the first nine months of 2014 has already gone up by 155% from the same period last year.”

“With IoE an irreversible trend, any mismanagement of devices and gadgets connected to an organization’s information infrastructure through the Internet can open the door to cyber-attacks. These may seriously affect the operation of industrial control systems of critical infrastructures,” she said.

To help the community address the new threats, in addition to joining hands with its partners in the Government, Internet services providers and international information security bodies, HKPC has also actively assisted enterprises and organizations in enhancing their IT governance, information security infrastructure and management systems to mitigate cyber security risks.

Jointly hosted by HKPC, HKCERT and six information security bodies, this year’s Summit addresses the theme of “Enhancing Business Governance to Embrace the Internet of Everything – Anticipating and Responding to Security Risks”.

Officiating guests at the opening of the Summit included Mr Daniel Lai, Government Chief Information Officer of the HKSAR, Mrs Agnes Mak, and Mr Dale Johnstone, Chairman of the Summit’s organizing committee.
