HKPC Creates Values for Industry through Technology Adoption & Partnership

With a rapidly changing market and business environment, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) is pooling its resources to help local enterprises and industry sectors create values and overcome business transformation challenges with flexibility and continuous innovations, says Mr Clement Chen, Chairman of HKPC.

In his message published in the HKPC 2013/14 Annual Report, tabled today (22 October 2014) at the Legislative Council, Mr Chen said, “A key objective of HKPC’s mission is to help Hong Kong companies bring a higher customer value to their products and services so as to enhance their international competitiveness.”

Under the theme of “Value”, the Report reviewed HKPC’s efforts to optimize its resources in 2013/14 to support enterprises and industries to create economic, environmental and social values.

Mr Chen said, “During the year, HKPC has launched new initiatives to help the industry adopt flexible manufacturing technology, intelligent robotics and process automation. We are also spearheading the application of 3D-printing to accelerate product innovation and explore new markets of low-volume and highly customized products.”

Highlighting the Council’s latest strategic partnerships with leading enterprises and research institutes, Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “These collaborations are conducive to the transfer of intelligent automation solutions, novel materials and advanced metal processing technology to the local industry.”

During the year HKPC has forged partnerships with the world’s leading intelligent robots supplier KUKA, as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT and the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC. HKPC has already initiated a R&D project with the Fraunhofer IPT to develop a cost-effective production method for high strength metal components.

On HKPC’s one-stop support services for SMEs, she said, “Since its operation in 2012, SME One has handled over 6,000 enquiries and made 82 referrals on funding and support scheme applications. To date, 13 applications have been approved, with total funding amounting to $15 million. Building on the successful experience of SME One, a new one-stop service centre, TecONE, is being set up at the Hong Kong Science Park to support technology startups.”
