'Made by Hong Kong' Electric Bus Makes Local Debut

The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today (26 October 2015) launched the first-ever 'Made by Hong Kong' electric bus - the R&D result of a close to $40 million R&D project commencing August 2013. It is funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government through the Hong Kong Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems (APAS) R&D Centre, and sponsorship from the project partner Green Dynamic Electric Vehicle Limited#.

Speaking at the media preview, Mr Stanley Lau, Chairman of HKPC, said, "The successful development of the 'Made by Hong Kong' electric bus by HKPC marks a new milestone in the green transport technology of Hong Kong. From overall bus body to vehicle system controller, with all the mission critical core technologies being designed by Hong Kong experts, the project enables local companies to tap the emerging green public transit market with the 'Made by Hong Kong' electric bus. It also strengthens the R&D competence of both HKPC and APAS R&D Centre, that will benefit the future development of other large-scale commercial electric vehicles (EV), and hasten the growth of the local EV industry."

The HKPC-developed electric bus has four distinctive features - light body, extended range, intelligent and localized design. It fully caters to the unique traffic condition of Hong Kong and the operation model of local franchised bus companies, the 'Made by Hong Kong' electric bus uses T6 grade Aluminum alloy for the bus body and gearbox-free Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor to reduce the overall weight and battery usage; and subsequently enables longer travel distance. Once fully charged, it can travel up to 380 kilometres. It also features a remote diagnosis system which can transmit operating data of the bus to the bus companies instantly for better vehicle maintenance and fleet management.

Mr Andrew Yung, Chairman and CEO of Green Dynamic Electric Vehicle Limited, said, "We are pleased to have teamed up with HKPC and APAS R&D Centre on the development of this 'Made by Hong Kong' electric bus which helps speed up our entry into the vast EV market. This project has demonstrated that local experts have the capability to develop electric buses with high standard compliance. As the R&D team has developed the core technologies and naturally will own the intellectual property. It will be easier for us to control the production cost and make the bus considerably competitive in other markets."

The 'Made by Hong Kong' electric bus will undergo a one-month road tests in Hong Kong, and functional test by an external testing body. It will also go on public display during InnoCarnival 2015.
