HKPC Helps Enterprises Re-Industrialize for a Smart Future

Amid ever-changing consumer demands and prevailing global economic uncertainties, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) will continue to help local enterprises uplift their competitiveness through technology innovation, and achieve the smart migration to the fourth industrial revolution (“Industry 4.0” or i4.0), says Mr Willy Lin, presenting his first Annual Report as Chairman of HKPC.

Mr Lin said, “Rapid advancement in technologies, a sea change in consumer behavior and volatile market environment are currently weighing on local enterprises. Despite these daunting challenges, business opportunities abound. HKPC will spare no effort to break new ground in applied R&D, introduce more timely and advanced support for the industry, and make new contributions to accelerate Hong Kong’s development in smart industry and smart city.”

Under the theme of “re-”, the 2015/2016 Annual Report, published today (2 November 2016), outlined HKPC’s efforts during the year in facilitating “re-industrialization” in Hong Kong and spearheading high value-added production and smart technologies to achieve sustainability in economic, environmental and social terms in the era of i4.0.

Highlighting HKPC’s works in 2015/2016, Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “Our industry support services are steered by a three-pronged strategy of ‘collaborating with stakeholders’, ‘focusing on areas of excellence’ and ‘scaling up platforms’. We have made solid progress in each of these strategic areas to meet the demands of Hong Kong industry.”

In 2015/2016, HKPC opened two new advanced technology support centres, 3D Printing One, and RoboticsOne. Since its opening in August 2015, 3D Printing One has received over 13,000 visitors. During the year, HKPC also launched an industry-wide campaign to promote the latest enabling smart technologies, implementation strategies and business opportunities of i4.0. The initiatives included collaboration with leading technology partners to enhance the adoption of smart production management by local industries; certified i4.0 training for industry practitioners, and development of an “i4.0 Smart Factory Certification Scheme” for local manufacturers in collaboration with a German research institute on i4.0 production technologies. HKPC also implemented the Recycling Fund of the HKSAR Government, and launched the “SME Biz Easy” mobile application to provide information support to enterprises.

In 2015/16, total service income of HKPC and its subsidiaries amounted to $437 million, an increase of 9.3% from 2014/15. A total of 917 consultancy projects were undertaken in the year.
