(Hong Kong, 20 December 2022) The “GBA International Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Summit 2022” (GBA AIR Summit), is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, the Guangdong Society of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, the Hong Kong Society of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and the Macau Greater Bay Area Artificial Intelligence Institute. Professor SUN Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, Hon Sunny TAN, Chairman of HKPC, Professor GAO Wen, President of the Guangdong Society of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Professor YANG Qiang, President of the Hong Kong Society of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Mr Michael CHAN, Director General of the Macau Greater Bay Area Artificial Intelligence Institute officiated the opening of the GBA AIR Summit. Leading international exerts were invited to provide participants with innovative applications and development trends of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies through keynote speeches and roundtable forum sessions.
The themes of this year are “Development Prospects of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics” and “Technologies, Applications and Outlook of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics”. The 2-day GBA AIR Summit held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 20 and 21 December brings together leading international academy fellows, Turning Award winners, experts and scholars to share development trends and industry prospects of intelligence robot. Topics covered include fostering development and cooperation on AI and robotics technologies in GBA, establishing a healthy innovation ecosystem and accelerating the development of a global I&T hub in GBA, so as to capture the opportunities for industry players.
Hon Sunny TAN, Chairman of HKPC, said, “GBA AIR Summit is the first major international conference on AI and robotics jointly organised by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao after President Xi Jinping delivered important speeches on 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and 20th National Congress of CPC. Together with the remarkable developments of Shenzhen and Guangdong, and the deepened collaboration amongst the three governments, a vibrant innovation and technology ecosystem is set to come into being in the Greater Bay Area for it to live up to the vision to be an international I&T hub. HKPC has long been accelerating the development of AI and robotics by addressing the pain points of Hong Kong enterprises in using related technologies, such as establishing a world’s first automated logistics and distribution centre for jewellery and inventing a tunnel inspection system leveraging the drone and on-board AI processing technologies. This GBA AIR Summit will provide a platform for heavyweight speakers to exchange insights, so that industry players can seize opportunities brought by AI and robotics. We believe that ‘Innovation Never Stops’. We will continue to support industries to commercialise their AI and robotics outcomes.”
Professor SUN Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government gave pre-recorded welcoming remarks at the Summit. Professor Sun said, “As the times progress, AI and robotics applications have become indispensable to our life. I believe this Summit will foster the collaboration amongst the three governments on AI and robotics technologies and will be of benefit to the promotion of Hong Kong as an international I&T hub. The 14th Five-Year Plan supported Hong Kong to develop into an international I&T hub, help Hong Kong better integrate into national development, and boost I&T co-operation of Mainland and Hong Kong. The HKSAR Government will continue to work with industry players to grasp the opportunities brought to them by the development of the GBA, so as to contribute to the GBA’s overall needs in AI and robotics technologies.”
The “Promotion Program of Intelligent Technology for 10K Hong Kong Youth” opening ceremony was also held at GBA AIR Summit. By launching technology activities for youths on a regular basis, it aims to foster their interest in pursuing a career in I&T after graduation and promote Hong Kong’s innovation development. The program, which is expected to benefit 10,000 youths in 3 years, is initiated by the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation, Chinese Academy of Sciences while HKPC is one of the co-founders.
GBA cities have been collaborating closely on AI and robotics issues. Apart from GBA AIR Summit, the Hong Kong Forum of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics was held lately to facilitate cooperation among the Government, industry, academia and research institutes on a regular basis, fully leveraging the complementary advantages of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, so as to achieve operating synergy on AI and robotics technologies.
HKPC has been sparing no effort in strengthening the technology application of AI and robotics among local enterprises. Apart from organising seminars, it is also collaborating with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology this year to jointly establish the HKUST-HKPC Joint Research Lab for Industrial AI and Robotics. This is to provide practical solutions with the adoption of AI and robotics technology, helping to enhance the productivity of industries in Hong Kong and simultaneously fostering intelligent and advanced manufacturing and industrial innovation and technology (I&T) talent development. Besides, “Intelligence robot” and “AI Augmented Analytics” are chosen as Top 10 Technologies in 2023 in the annual signature event “Foresight 2023” forum. This implies potential is huge for AI and robotics, and industry players have to keep abreast of these developments to capture the opportunities.
