“Hong Kong Tech Challenge Game 2024” Concludes on a High Note Hong Kong Team's Quarter-final Finish Showcases Youth's I&T Capabilities

(Hong Kong, 3 June 2024) The “Hong Kong Tech Challenge Game 2024” awards ceremony was recently held. The competition was hosted by the Asian Robotics League Fund (ARLF), implemented by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), and sponsored by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) of the HKSAR Government. It is a major innovation and technology (I&T) event in the local academic community. This year, over 60 teams participated in the Hong Kong regional competition, and six winning teams from Hong Kong represented the city to compete in the "VEX Robotics World Championship" in the United States, competing alongside over 10,000 participants from 40 countries and regions. Ultimately, more than half of the Hong Kong teams successfully entered the quarter-finals, bringing glory to Hong Kong. The theme of this year's competition was "Over Under", in which participants competed in teams, testing their programming and robot control capabilities, strategic application, as well as teamwork. The aim was to encourage students to learn robotics technology from an early age and enhance Hong Kong students' experience in participating in international I&T competitions.

The "Hong Kong Tech Challenge Game 2024" was a competition that spanned eight months and was divided into junior and senior secondary categories. To enhance students' robotics skills and knowledge, the organiser arranged a series of training workshops, coding mentorship programmes, and practice competitions. The winning teams from the Hong Kong regional competition also took the stage to share their competition experiences and insights at the ceremony.

Mr TONG Cham Chun, Principal of CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School, said, “This competition gave our students the opportunity to exchange ideas and skills with robotics teams from around the world, enabling them to enhance their technical skills in assembly and control, broaden their horizons, and strive for success in international competitions. This year marks our school’s fourth participation in the World Championship. While our team reached the quarter-finals, it was a satisfactory outcome for our school. The observation during the competition exposed us to new technologies and strategies, motivating us to enhance our skills further. CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School, with its unwavering commitment to the development of students’ STEAM potential, dedicates ample resources to promote STEAM activities such as training students in hands-on STEAM capabilities and offering design-related courses to educate students on STEAM concepts. Additionally, our school houses multiple STEAM workshops like the STEAM Centre, Robotics Practice Room, and Student Creative Invention Exhibition Hall, equipped with advanced production machinery to allow students to independently learn STEAM-related skills and knowledge."

Ms Shirla SUM, Principal of Victoria Shanghai Academy, said, “Representing Hong Kong at the 'VEX Robotics World Championship' was an honour for the students of our School Robotics Team. The school is glad to be a part of Hong Kong's growing technology and innovation community, and to be part of fostering the next generation of aspiring entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators. The students of Robotics Team gained not only valuable experience in engineering, design, teamwork and problem-solving, but by competing against students from around the world, they learned to share knowledge and form friendships across cultures. The 2024 Hong Kong Tech Challenge marked the first time the VSA High School team had competed in any robotics competition. Despite this challenge, the students overcome this obstacle to win the ‘Innovation Award’ by being resilient, working hard every day, finding creative solutions to problems and embracing the support of the VSA community. While this was their first robotics competition, Victoria Shanghai Academy has a strong focus on STEAM education, with a dedicated Technology and Innovation department. Programmes like robotics, coding, 3D printing, and more provide students opportunities to develop critical skills.”

Ms Karen FUNG, Chief Marketing Officer and General Manager of the InnoPreneur & FutureSkills Division of HKPC, said: "HKPC has been supporting the 'Hong Kong Tech Challenge Game', encouraging students to get in touch with I&T from an early age and cultivating their ability to think from multiple perspectives and problem-solving. We are delighted to see the students' outstanding performance in the competition, fully demonstrating the unlimited potential of Hong Kong students in the I&T field. The Council is actively promoting new productivity forces and new industrialisation, where talent is the primary resource and a crucial foundation for the development of I&T. The HKPC Academy, a subsidiary of HKPC, is committed to promoting TechEd and nurturing I&T talent. This summer, we will launch the 'Land, Marine and Aviation Summer Camp', allowing students to experience the fun of drone flights, operate model hovercraft, and design F1 racing cars, enrich their STEAM knowledge. The Academy will also hold the annual free event 'Summer TechEd Fest 2024' on 5 – 6 July. The event will feature an array of interactive booths, workshops, experience zones, and guided tours. This year, the theme is 'A+STEM', integrating arts into technology education, showcasing the latest interdisciplinary education solutions to educators, parents, and students, as well as raising public awareness of the connection between arts and technology, in order to cultivate diversified talent."
