To help local manufacturers comply with international environmental regulations, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, has developed a cold spraying process that is capable of hardening moulds and repairing big engineering parts without causing pollution.
Dr L K Yeung, General Manager (Material Technology) of HKPC, said, "Chromium electroplating has been used on metal moulds and engineering parts for surface finishing. However, the use of carcinogenic chromium (VI) can produce wastewater that pollutes the environment and is hazardous to the operators. In fact, some Western countries and manufacturers have already banned electroplating with chromium."
He said, "Emerging as an alternative is cold spraying, an environmental friendly technology that meets international regulations."
According to Dr Yeung, contrary to conventional thermal spraying processes, cold spraying does not require preheating of the sprayed materials. It involves injecting microscopic particles of metal or other solids into a supersonic jet of rapidly expanding gas and shooting them at a target substrate to form a coating.
"Specially designed to meet the needs of Hong Kong industry, the cold spraying process is capable of strengthening mould surfaces and repairing big engineering parts without producing wastewater," he said.
"In addition to repairing and modifying moulds for manufacturers with the new process, HKPC also offers consultancy services to help them adopt the technology," Dr Yeung added.
