HKPC Showcase Provides Updates on IT Management and Software Quality

Over 500 representatives from the information technology (IT) and business sectors today (4 September 2007) attended the seminar and exhibition of the "IT Management Showcase", organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Held annually since 2000, the Showcase aims to provide the latest information on the development, trends, new products and services in information security, IT service management and software quality. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr John Wong, Assistant Government Chief Information Officer (Infrastructure and Security) of HKSAR Government, and Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director of HKPC.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Fung said: "Many information security problems, especially those related to hacking and malware, arise from vulnerabilities in the system. More often then not, they are caused by programme errors or design flaws."

"Instead of spending time identifying errors after product delivery and installation, we believe a more proactive way of dealing with the problem is for software developers to improve the quality of their products by identifying and removing all possible errors before putting their products on the market. Such proactive action will go a long way to reduce the often time-consuming exercise of developing and providing fixes and patches and it will also minimize disruptions to their customers," he said.

Highlighting HKPC's efforts in promoting the importance of software quality, Mr Fung said: "Over the years, we have introduced various software development practices and process improvement schemes such as the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI). With the rising incidence of software errors, it is time for us to raise this important issue again and hence, the expansion of the scope of the Showcase this year to cover this issue help refocus people’s mind in the importance of software quality."

The Showcase this year comprises a one-day seminar and exhibition on 4 September, and three technical workshops from 3 to 6 September.
