Logistics Forum Promotes Integration of Technology into Supply Chain Management

More than 400 representatives from the local logistics and trading sectors attended the "Hong Kong Logistics Technology Management Forum" organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today (12 March 2007). The event was sponsored by the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council (LOGSCOUNCIL), and supported by 19 trade associations and organizations.

Under the theme of "Enhancing Logistics Industry's Competitiveness through Integration of Technology into Supply Chain Management", the event aimed to provide a platform for local logistics companies to keep abreast of the global trends of supply chain and technology management, as well as applications of the latest logistics technology.

The opening ceremony of the Forum was officiated by the Hon. Miriam Lau, Shepherd of S-Logistics Project Group (Support for SMEs), LOGSCOUNCIL and member of the Legislative Council; Mr K K Yeung, Shepherd of H-Logistics Project Group (Human Resources), LOGSCOUNCIL, and Mr Edmund Sung, Director (Business Productivity) of HKPC.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Sung said, "HKPC is committed to supporting the development of the local logistics industry. As highlighted in the Financial Secretary's Budget Speech this year, HKPC in collaboration with the LOGSCOUNCIL, serves as project manager and technology expert in the implementation of the On-Board Trucker Information System (OBTIS) on a trial basis, and will continue to enhance the competitiveness of logistics practitioners through the provision of training programmes to help them master job-related information and automation technologies."

On the significance of the integration between supply chain management and technology, he said, "With rapid technological advancement, globalization, growing competition and pressure for lower costs, supply chain efficiency has become a key driver of competitiveness for most industries. The growth of China's economy and its emerging consumer market also provide ample opportunities for Hong Kong's trading and logistics sectors. Overcoming business and technical challenges for good supply chain management calls for effective use of IT and logistics technology."

Speakers at the Forum included logistics services providers, end-users and academics, with topics covering strategies and technological solutions for SMEs, as well as best practices in supply chain management in the Mainland and Hong Kong.

A logistics solutions showcase was held concurrently to present the latest products and services from more than 20 technology providers. Freight DTTN, radio frequency identification (RFID), fleet management and global positioning system, customer relationship management and the OBTIS were among the technology areas featured.
