SMEs Urged to Roll out Strategies to Tap Opportunities of 12th Five-Year Plan

Hong Kong SMEs are urged to equip for the business opportunities accompanying the National 12th Five-Year Plan, said political and economic experts and industry leaders at a SME seminar jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Hong Kong Economic Journal’s “EJ Insight” website today (24 October 2011).

Addressing the Seminar, Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “Facing uncertainties in our traditional export markets, Renminbi appreciation, and rising production costs, local SMEs need to identify new strategy for sustainable development. With emphasis on boosting domestic demand, promoting the services sector, emerging industries, and technology innovation, the 12th Five-Year Plan will create vast business opportunities for Hong Kong SMEs; while the traditional processing trade sector will inevitably shrink. SMEs should seize these opportunities.”

On HKPC’s related support to SMEs, Mrs Mak said, “Apart from offering professional consultancy and training services, HKPC has launched various industrial upgrading support platforms with municipal governments in the Pearl River Delta (PRD). We have also introduced the Mainland Domestic Sales Support Program for SME and the Eastern Mainland Second-tier Cities Domestic Sales Support Program for SMEs, and have been working with provincial and municipal governments and R & D bodies outside PRD on new collaboration, preparing Hong Kong companies to tap the Mainland market.”

Apart from Mr Clement Chen, Chairman of HKPC, other seminar speakers included Professor Lau Siu-kai, Head of Central Policy Unit, HKSAR Government; Mr Chang Ka-mun, Managing Director of Li & Fung Research Centre and Li & Fung Development (China) Ltd.; and veteran China analyst Mr Antonio Ma.
