HKPC Develops Hong Kong’s First Automatic Idle Stop and Air Conditioning System

To alleviate the problem of high in-vehicle temperature during idle stop condition and to improve roadside air quality, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), with the funding supporting of the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) of the HKSAR Government and Woo Wheelock Green Fund, successfully developed Hong Kong’s first automatic idle stop and air conditioning system.

Introducing the system to the media today (12 December 2011), Mr Clement Chen, Chairman of HKPC, said, “The HKPC-developed automatic idle stop and air conditioning system has various unique features. With this system, when a vehicle comes to a complete stop, the engine will stop automatically, cutting emissions caused by the idling engine. Also, once the engine stops automatically, the auxiliary air conditioning system will operate immediately and can continue to function for up to one hour. The whole system does not require the fitting of devices on the vehicle’s body, keeping its good look while ensuring its operation unaffected by the weather. Most importantly, the system can reduce fuel consumption, resulting in saving in fuel bills while protecting the environment.”

“The system is now undergoing patent registration. We plan to commercialize the technology through licensing to auto parts manufacturers for the sales and production, creating business opportunities for the industry,” he added.

On the request of the public transport sector and funded by ECF, HKPC is currently upgrading the system in order to extend the supply of in-vehicle air conditioning for up to two hours. With the support of the N. W. Area Taxi Drivers and Operators Association, the enhanced system is expected to be fitted in for testing in early 2012.
