Thirty-Eight Companies and Corporate Volunteer Teams Recognized for CSR Excellence in 2nd Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Award

The outstanding achievements of 38 companies and corporate volunteer teams in the implementation and promotion of corporate social responsibility (CSR) were recognized at the “2nd Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Award” presentation ceremony today (8 December 2011) (see attached list).

The Award is a highlight of the “2nd Hong Kong Corporate Citizenship Program” jointly launched by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE), with sponsorship from the Bank of China (Hong Kong).

Mr Stephen Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was the Guest-of-Honour at the ceremony. Other officiating guests included Mr Clement Chen, Chairman of HKPC; Dr Jennifer Ng, Member of CPCE and Chairperson of the Award’s judging panel; and Ms Zhu Yanlai, Assistant Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong).

The Award Scheme this year includes four categories, namely Services Enterprise, Manufacturing Enterprise, SME, and Volunteer Team; each with gold, silver, bronze and merit awards. Winners of the Gold Award include Power Assets Holdings Limited (Services Enterprise), Amoy Food Limited (Manufacturing Enterprise), Dunwell Enviro-Tech (Holdings) Limited (SME), and NWS Volunteer Alliance (Volunteer Team).

Mr Chen said, “By adopting CSR practices, businesses can strengthen their competitiveness in the long-term while enhancing their credibility, addressing the expectations and demands of international buyers, and raising staff morale.”

Summarizing the winners’ experience, Mr Chen said, “To be successful in the implementation of CSR, it calls for the full support of the top management to incorporate CSR practices into their companies’ business objectives; CSR-oriented products and services; and the contribution of the organizations’ professional knowledge to the community.”

At the seminar following the ceremony, the results of the second “Hong Kong SME CSR Index” survey, jointly developed by HKPC and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was announced. The Index is derived from assessing the CSR performance of 200 SMEs in seven major industry groups from the perspectives of six stakeholder groups, including employees, customers, investors, suppliers, community and the environment. This year the mean score of the Index was 76.1 (maximum being 100), up 0.3 from the first survey last year. In terms of the six sectors, the CSR performance of SMEs related to investor, community and environment engagement have improved.

At the occasion, the Gold Award winners of the “2nd Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Award” also shared their success stories. In addition, a prize presentation of the “Best Corporate Citizenship Proposal Competition” and “Hong Kong Corporate Citizenship Poster Competition” was held (see attached list).

Apart from this Program, HKPC has also launched a new phase of the CSRCARE program to help businesses formulate their CSR roadmaps. Internally, HKPC also supports its staff to participate in community service. For its “Toys Bank” project, “HKPC Volunteers” solicits local businesses to donate toys to children and families in need. It also teamed up with HKPC environmental management experts and charity organizations to present HKPC-developed water purifying systems to schools in Sichuan province.
