HKPC Kicks off First Government-Funded Electric Bus R&D Project

The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has recently embarked on the first Government-funded R&D project to develop a ‘Made by Hong Kong’ pure electric bus that will fully meet the requirements of the local market. The close to $40 million project is funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government through the Hong Kong Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre, and sponsorship from Green Dynamic Electric Vehicle Limited.

Introducing the project today (4 October 2013), Mr Joseph Poon, Director (Technology Development) of HKPC, said, “The HKPC-developed pure electric bus will have four distinctive features - light body, extended range, intelligent and localized design. Local experts will develop the mission critical core technologies, from overall design to vehicle system controller for this ‘Made by Hong Kong’ electric bus. It will also fulfill the unique driving condition and traffic requirements of Hong Kong.”

The electric bus will use T6 grade Aluminum alloy for the bus body, and the compact, efficient and gearbox-free Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor to reduce the overall weight and battery usage; and subsequently enables longer travel distance. Once fully charged, it can travel up to 300 kilometres. Another unique feature is a remote diagnosis system which can transmit the bus’s operating data to the headquarters instantly for better vehicle maintenance and fleet management. In addition, the new vehicle will fully cater to Hong Kong traffic condition and the operation model of local franchised bus companies.

Mr Andrew Yung, Chairman and CEO of the project partner Green Dynamic Electric Vehicle Limited, said, “Hong Kong experts have the capability to develop electric buses with high standard compliance. As the R&D team will develop the core technologies and naturally own the intellectual property, it will be easier for us to control the production cost. We trust that this ‘Made by Hong Kong’ electric bus will be considerably competitive in other markets.”

The HKPC-developed ‘Made by Hong Kong’ electric bus will undergo road tests in the first quarter of 2015. It is expected to hit the market in the third quarter of the same year.

On top of providing a zero-emission green transport solution for the industry and the community, the R&D team is eyeing on a higher vision. Mr Poon said, “With the resulted core technologies, we hope to help the industry apply them for the development of other large-scale commercial electric vehicles (EV). The adoption of EV will then ride on the fast track.”
