HKPC Helps Hong Kong Industry Gear up Cyber Security for Industry 4.0

Hong Kong industries must strengthen their cyber security capabilities in order to reap the full benefits of “Industry 4.0” and to satisfy the market trend of mass customization, Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), told a conference on “Cyber Security for Industry 4.0” which opens today (23 June 2017).

Organized by HKPC and funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, the Conference presented the cyber security challenges in the technological, legal and human aspects of the fourth industrial revolution, more commonly known as “Industry 4.0” with sharing from overseas and local experts. The event was opened by Mr Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology.

Speaking at the opening, Mrs Mak said, “Sound and reliable cyber security capabilities will be the critical prerequisite for manufacturers to ensure their competitiveness and operational safety in ‘Industry 4.0’.”

She said, “In the new era of ‘Industry 4.0’ when industrial and operating systems are interconnected, there will be a growing use of smart technologies and integration with advanced manufacturing technologies and systems, for example, 3D printing and industrial robots. This will significantly enhance efficiency and flexibility in production, but also lead to more network interfaces and larger flow of data over untrusted network, creating a whole new range of cyber security risks.”

Cyber attacks targeting these connected industrial and operating systems will result in the disruption of service, loss of smart data such as intellectual properties, or even financial or legal liabilities.

To enhance local enterprise’ knowledge of this issue, on top of hosting this Conference, HKPC will show the best practices on addressing cyber threats at “Smart Industry One”, a soon-to-be-opened facility at HKPC to demonstrate the smart operation in “Industry 4.0”. Furthermore, HKPC also pioneered a series of “Industry 4.0” initiatives, including consultancy service, study missions and training to support Hong Kong manufacturers to upgrade to this new trend of development smoothly.
