Hong Kong Secondary Students and HKPC Set Guinness World Record with Mega 3D-Printed Victoria Harbour Display

The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and local secondary students set a new Guinness World Record on “The Largest Display of 3D-Printed Sculptures” in a single venue with a mega Victoria Harbour model to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the HKSAR. Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, today (16 July 2017) officiated the lighting ceremony of the 35m2 model which comprises 1,214 3D-printed sculptures.

The record-setting feat also marked the finale of the “Hong Kong Secondary Schools 3D Printing Design Competition” under the theme of “Our Glamorous Victoria Harbour”. Aiming to promote creativity and the innovative use of 3D printing among the younger generation in Hong Kong, the event was organized by HKPC with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, and support of the Education Bureau, various education groups and industry associations.

The Competition attracted 236 entries from 123 schools. Out of the 20 finalists, the winners of the Grand Award, the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were also announced at the ceremony (annex).

Accompanying Mrs Lam and Mr Willy Lin, Chairman of HKPC, at the ceremony included Mr Nicholas W Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology; Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, Permanent Secretary for Innovation and Technology; Miss Annie Choi, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology; and Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC. The Guinness World Records adjudicator was also on hand to present the record certificate.

Launched in October 2016, the Competition had received 236 entries from 123 secondary schools with participation of 1,236 students and teachers. By using computer-aided design (CAD) software and advanced 3D printing technologies, participating school teams redesigned and fabricated 20 landmark buildings on both sides of the Victoria Harbour. The 20 winning building designs, together with 1,194 pieces of 3D-printed objects, form the mega Victoria Harbour model to create the Guinness World Record.

The record-setting team comprises more than 600 representatives from the 119 semi-finalist school teams, HKPC 3D-printing experts, and local architect and chief advisor of the Competition Mr Sidney Tang. The model will be on public display in Hong Kong after the ceremony.
