HKPC's Food Waste Total Recycling System - Wins Top Accolades in IET Innovation Awards, UK

The “Food Waste Total Recycling System”, developed by environmental management experts of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), was granted the winner of the “Power” category and a “Certificate of Highly Commended” in the “Sustainability” category at the prestigious “IET Innovation Awards” presentation ceremony held on 15 November 2017 in London, the UK.

Organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the IET Innovation Awards is an annual event aiming to celebrate the very best in new innovations in science, engineering and technology. The awards attract over 300 entries from around the world every year to compete for recognitions in 15 categories.

To address the food waste problem in Hong Kong, Dr Anthony Ma, Principal Consultant (Environmental Management) of HKPC, led his team to develop the world’s first three-stage “Food Waste Total Recycling System” in 2016, with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund. With zero emission, the system can fully convert the organic fraction of food waste into three products with high market value - high purity biogas, protein-rich eco fish feed, and quality waste oil for biodiesel production.

Built with a patented automated pre-treatment unit to sort out inert materials and two separate bioreactors for food waste decomposition and biogas generation respectively, the developed system can effectively decompose oily food waste, and maximize the biogas yield and purity. The whole process has no wastewater discharge. Furthermore, the system is compact in size and requires minimal manual operation.

The Food Waste Total Recycling System has won other renowned awards. These included the “2016 Hong Kong Awards for Industries: Equipment and Machinery Design Certificate of Merit”; a Gold Medal with Congratulations of Jury in the “45th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva”; and the Champion in HKIE Environmental Paper Award in 2017.
