HKPC and Huawei Join Hands to Foster ICT Talent Training and Development

(Hong Kong, 24 October 2022) – The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and Huawei Hong Kong (Huawei) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last Saturday (22 October). Both as industry pioneers, HKPC and Huawei have pledged to collaborate on training information and communication technology (ICT) talent, connecting industries and nurturing talent of high calibre, enhancing the quality and technical content of ICT talent training in Hong Kong.

Witnessed by Dr Lawrence CHEUNG, Chief Innovation Officer of HKPC and Mr Jerry JI, Managing Director of Huawei Hong Kong Enterprise Business Group, the MOU was signed by Ms Karen FUNG, General Manager, InnoPreneur and FutureSkills of HKPC and Ms Sunny DING, Director of Channel & Alliance, Huawei Hong Kong Enterprise Business Group at HKPC.

Dr Lawrence CHEUNG, Chief Innovation Officer of HKPC, said, “The National 14th Five Year Plan supports Hong Kong to become an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub. The I&T industry is up-and-coming with keen demand for talent globally. In addition to admitting overseas talent, it is even more important to nurture local I&T talent. HKPC strives to communicate with local enterprises and educational institutions to strengthen the collaboration among the government, industry, academic and research sectors, to promote Hong Kong I&T education and cultivate technology talent in various aspects. Huawei has been our important partner working hand in hand to foster the technology education (TechEd) development. Looking forward, we will work even more closely to cultivate I&T talent through training and competitions, leveraging our experience and support in the I&T sector to lay the foundation for grooming talent for the Hong Kong I&T industry in the future.”

Mr Jerry JI, Managing Director of Huawei Hong Kong Enterprise Business Group, said, “The Chief Executive's 2022 Policy Address pointed out that the Government will actively cultivate and retain local talent. Cultivating Hong Kong ICT talent is our common goal and mission. Huawei has always been committed to building ICT talent ecosystem with ecological partners. We have established 1,900 ICT Academy worldwide, trained over 7,000 Huawei Certified Academy Instructors (HCAI) and more than 150,000 students each year. This year, Huawei continues to hold the Huawei ICT Competition in Hong Kong to gather more local young talent and enhance their ICT knowledge. In addition, together with HKPC and other partners, Huawei will launch a talent recruitment fair next year to provide a comprehensive platform for students to quickly adapt to society and gain more opportunities for future career development.”

Under the collaboration, HKPC will become a Huawei Authorized Learning Partner (HALP), one of the five centres in Hong Kong, organising ICT seminars and inviting participation from start-ups and tertiary students. HKPC and Huawei will co-organise the examinations for Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA), Huawei Certified ICT Professional (HCIP) and Huawei Certified ICT Expert (HCIE), and provide training courses to prepare participants for the examinations. Moreover, HKPC will deepen its collaboration with Huawei on the employment of I&T talent.

On the same day of the MOU Signing Ceremony, the Open Day of “Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Hong Kong SAR” (Huawei ICT Competition) was held, in which the details of this year’s competition were introduced, and the winner of First Prize last year shared on the experience. Huawei ICT Competition is an accredited event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) organised by Huawei, fully supported by HKPC as one of the co-organisers, and the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer of the HKSAR Government as the advisor.

Mr Tony WONG, JP, Deputy Government Chief Information Officer, said at the event, “In the past few years, we have launched a number of important smart city infrastructures. The Government is going to accelerate the digital transformation of public services to further improve the efficiency and qualities of public services. We will conduct a comprehensive e-government audit in the coming three years that enable bureaux and departments to leverage advanced technologies to expertise the development of a smart government. We aim to turn all government services online in two years, and provide one-stop digital services within three years. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Huawei and the HKPC for their joint effort in nurturing our local tech talent and giving full support to Hong Kong’s I&T development.”

The Huawei ICT Competition aims to discover Hong Kong ICT talent, providing a great opportunity for them to connect and exchange with technology leaders, enhance technological skills, and stay abreast of international trends. HKPC will offer three months complimentary Inno Space membership to the participants so that they can leverage the facilities and professional machines at HKPC to turn innovative ideas and designs into prototypes, with the guidance of technical staff.
