Automobile Services Drive to Set up Quality Scheme

With the support of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), nine local automobile service industry organizations and engineering societies (Appendix) covering car and auto parts sales, vehicle maintenance to car beautification pledge to enhance the professional standards of the sector with the signing of the Charter for Quality Automobile Service today (26 April 2009).

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr Ringo Lee, Convenor of the Charter, said: "The automobile service sector is one of Hong Kong's major service industries which covers the field of car sales, maintenance, parts sales, car beautification, finance and insurance etc., representing about 7,000 enterprises with over 53,000 practitioners. To strive for quality service and raise professional standards are the prerequisites for maintaining a competitive edge in the current economic situation. With the assistance of HKPC, we have drawn up a quality service charter to help engineer enhancement in six areas, namely customer rights, professional standard, technical support, environmental conservation, industry network and community service, in order to benefit car owners, the public and the trade."

Acting as a witness to the signing of the Charter, the Honourable Andrew Leung, Chairman of HKPC, said: "With our track record in various quality service schemes, the HKPC will develop a comprehensive Quality Automobile Service Scheme for the industry covering sales, maintenance and repair etc. This includes the use of 'mystery customers' and on-site evaluation to assess the service standards of the participating operators and the introduction of a registration scheme for car dealers. We will also support the industry in mapping out its future development plan and raising the professional standards through the establishment of the Federation of Hong Kong Automobile Service Industry. In addition, with the funding support of the Hong Kong Government, we and the Hong Kong Vehicle Repair Merchants Association will launch in June a scheme to promote the use of international vehicle service operation standard VDA6.2."

The signing of the Charter was also witnessed by the Honourable Miriam Lau, Legislative Council Member (Transport) of HKSAR; Mr Joseph Lai, Director-General of Trade and Industry, HKSAR Government; Mr Andrew Lai, Deputy Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR Government; and Ms Sana Lai, Head of Complaints and Advice Division, Consumer Council.

Rare cars of different era built with different technologies, including a 1961 Bentley classic car and the latest model of a solar energy powered car, also lined up at HKPC for the occasion.
