SME Urged to Chart a New Course with Business Transformation

In the light of shrinking overseas markets and spiralling costs, Hong Kong SMEs are urged to embark on business transformation and industrial upgrading in order to raise their competitiveness and open new markets, said speakers at a seminar jointly organized by Hong Kong SME Forum and the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today (4 August 2011).

The “Hong Kong Airport and Export Trade: Now and Future” SME seminar brought together financial analyst and industry experts to share their insights on the business outlook for SMEs from the perspectives of the overall economy, manufacturing industry and infrastructure policy.

Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “In the first half of this year, the total value of Hong Kong exports has gone up 15% from the same period last year. While it shows a gradual pick-up, the growth is mainly caused by the rise in order price. Hong Kong companies are facing escalating production costs and have to raise the prices to maintain profits. Here lies the biggest challenge for local exporters – they cannot have their clients shoulder all the extra costs.”

“HKPC has been actively promoting SMEs to engage in high value-adding business to face the challenge. We have launched various industrial upgrading funding schemes with municipal governments in the Pearl River Delta, and also introduced the ‘Wise Business’ programme and the ‘China Domestic Sales Support Program for SME’ to enhance their competitiveness,” she added.

Seminar speakers included Mr George Leung, Advisor, Strategy and Economics, Asia-Pacific, HSBC; Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Treasurer and Sustainable Development Sub-Committee Chairman of the Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association / Past President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers; Dr Oliver Yau, Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Gold & Silver Ornament Workers & Merchants General Union; and Mr Stanley Hui, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong.
