HK-INC Explores Wider Use of Advanced Technologies in Food Safety

To help address the community’s long-standing concern over food safety, the “Hong Kong Industry Network Clusters” (HK-INC) of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) convened today (29 October 2012) to explore a wider use of advanced technologies to improve risk management in the local food processing and catering industries.

Mrs Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, “Over the past ten years, the food processing industry in China has grown rapidly. At present, China is the second largest processed food exporter in the world. The 12th Five-Year Plan has specially stated the urgent need to raise food safety standards by improving the monitoring mechanism, enhanced testing, establishing an information system, and strengthening food safety technologies.”

“The meeting agreed that food processing industry and catering operators should adopt technology to enhance food risk management as they explore opportunities arising from tougher food quality controls under the 12th Five-Year Plan. HKPC will summarize the comments expressed by the industry and communicate with the Government to help formulate strategies to facilitate such development, while strengthening our support to industry,” She added.

Held regularly, HK-INC aims to gauge the views of industry on issues of relevance to their development. Previous meetings on domestic sales, Guangzhou-Hong Kong cooperation, information security, and SME support as well as industry sectors such as environmental, creative, watch, information and communication technology, critical components, and toys were convened with participants from the Government, trade and industry organizations, business and SME associations.
