(Hong Kong, 27 May 2021) The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) was very delighted to invite Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment; Mr Alfred Sit, Secretary for Innovation and Technology; and Ms Rebecca Pun, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government, to visit “Food TranSmarter” at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) yesterday. Developed by HKPC with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund (Public Sector Trial Scheme), “Food TranSmarter” is the first-ever system in Hong Kong to automatically liquefy food waste into slurry.
Dr Lawrence Cheung, Chief Innovation Officer, and Mr Du Yonghai, General Manager, Green Living and Innovation of HKPC, accompanied the visit together with Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President; Mr Eric Ng, Vice-President (Administration) and University Secretary; and Mrs Cecilia Lam, Chief Sustainability Officer, and Director, Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office of CUHK. During the visit, Dr Anthony Ma, Principal Consultant, Green Living and Innovation of HKPC, introduced the R&D concept of “Food TranSmarter”. He also demonstrated food waste tipping and treatment, and slurry transportation processes for a better understanding on how “Food TranSmarter” offers a simple, clean and hygienic solution to the collection and shipping of food waste.
With “Food TranSmarter”, instead of being disposed at landfill, food waste can now be converted into renewable energy. It helps to reduce carbon emissions significantly and has a positive impact on green living, environmental protection and waste-to-energy initiatives. For many years, CUHK has been committed to promoting sustainable development, sparing no effort on waste reduction. The successful trial run of “Food TranSmarter” in four restaurants at CUHK since October 2020 is the latest proof of the university’s tireless efforts in promoting green living. HKPC strives to achieve for wider application of “Food TranSmarter” in local restaurants, malls and housing estates, which will help to advance Hong Kong’s development of innovative environmental technologies, and contribute to making Hong Kong the capital of smart utilisation of food waste and a smart and green city.
