Biomedical Engineers Turn Novel Research into Patient Benefits

Scientists, engineers and manufacturers have vowed to work together to turn groundbreaking biomedical research into patient and financial benefits at the BME2008 Hong Kong Biomedical Engineering International Conference which opened today (23 October 2008).

Jointly organized by the Biomedical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), the three-day event presents the latest R&D results in biomedical engineering, business opportunities, and framework in mandatory regulation of medical devices.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Chan Fuk-cheung, Vice President of HKIE, said: "Undoubtedly, there is a need for the industry to tackle some of the most fundamental biological questions that cannot be solved without in-depth researches. By developing technologies and concepts in these researches such as biomechanics, nanotechnology in biomedical applications, biomaterial and tissue engineering, we are able to bring different fields of expertise together to find cures and treatments for diseases."

Highlighting HKPC's role in promoting the development of the local medical and healthcare device industry, Mr Derek Louie, Conference Chair and Principal Consultant (Manufacturing Technology) of HKPC, said: "As a bridge between research institutions and industry, HKPC is committed to turning groundbreaking research results into commercial applications to benefit businesses and the community at large. A recent example is our collaboration with the University of Hong Kong in the development of an artificial finger joint tailor-made for the Chinese people. Upon completion of this project, local arthritis sufferers will be able to have the full use of their hands again."

Under the theme of "Converging Frontiers in Biomedical Engineering from Novel Research to Patient Benefits", the Conference was funded by the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government. Today's opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Ho Kwong-wai, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services of the HKSAR Government.
