HKPC Develops 3D Automatic Laser Deposit Welding System for Mould Repair and Modification

To enhance the competitiveness of the local mould and die industry, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has developed an integrated 3D automatic laser deposit welding system that can help manufacturers repair and modify moulds with high precision.

Introducing the advantages of the laser welding technology, Mr L M Li, General Manager (Manufacturing Technology) of HKPC, said, "When a product design specification changes or a mould is damaged, it usually takes a long time for mould manufacturers to re-work or repair with the conventional argon welding approach. The integrated 3D automatic laser deposit welding system, developed by HKPC with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the HKSAR Government, is capable of repairing and modifying moulds with high precision in a process that causes no thermal cracking and few pores. By using the smallest laser spot (0.2mm in diameter) and wire (0.17mm in diameter), laser deposit welding can reach mould areas that a conventional welding process cannot."

"The new system also has other advantages over the old method, including the small size of the heat-affected zone and possible programming through an extension of a CAD (computer-aided design)/CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) system. It is applicable to a variety of substrate materials including aluminum, copper and all conventional types of moulds and tool steels," he said.

"In addition to repairing and modifying moulds for manufacturers with the new technology, HKPC also offers consultancy services to help them adopt the new system," Mr Li added.
